Bringing Wheelchairs Into The 21st Century

Posted by admin on August 23rd, 2008

Having recently taken part in research to create accessible footpaths out of recycled chip bark and the testing of their level of usability for wheelchair users I came to one very important conclusion. Let me firstly explain the research conditions:

Trials involved attempting to push (or be pushed) in a wheelchair through 100mm depth of varying thickness woodchip. Well, if like myself you are a wheelchair user you will already know what the result was! Yes, the front wheels simply sunk or dug in. Any forward motion was in fact impossible (with or without assistance)

In an ideal world wood chip or bark would be the best possible surface in woodland pathways, cheap to produce, convenient to acquire and very soft to fall or walk on also hardwearing, environmentally friendly and of course cheep! But unfortunately not wheelchair friendly. So what is the answer?

To find the answer we need to go back in-time (No, not Dr Who style) we need to look at the wheelchair as it was designed.

Choosing and Caring for Teak Outdoor Furniture

Posted by admin on August 22nd, 2008

When it comes to choosing a material to use for your outdoor furniture, you have many options to choose from: metal, plastic, cedar, oak, and of course teak. Teak is a great choice for outdoor furniture because it can withstand the weather and the wood becomes even more beautiful as it ages season after season.

Teak outdoor furniture is one of the highest quality types of outdoor furniture you can buy. It is strong and durable, as well as stylish and popular. The wood is a tropical hardwood, commonly found in such places as Indonesia and other tropical locales.

Teak grows in very dry and hilly forests. It is best known for being extremely durable no matter what type of weather you have in your neighborhood. Teak outdoor furniture can also fight off rotting, cracking, and warping because of its hardwood nature.

When you first get your teak outdoor furniture, you’ll notice its beautiful honey hue. But teak is actually known for is that gray, handsome weathered look that it gets after a couple seasons in the elements. The beautiful thing about the teak outdoor furniture and its gray color is that this does not in any way impact the strength of the hardwood. Teak is made for the ages, so it can be as durable and strong as any other wood for years to come. Read the rest of this entry »

Dining Chairs?comfort And Quality Available Online

Posted by admin on August 21st, 2008

With very good reason, many of us are still a bit skeptical when it comes to online shopping and hunting for the best prices on the Internet. There are a lot of people out there trying to get our identities and use them to make purchases in our names. Some sites are even set up to look legitimate but really only exist to get our credit card information. So, whether you are shopping for beautiful dining chairs to complement that gorgeous oak dining room table you got for a steal on Ebay last week or a gift for your uncle Jim?there is always a risk of having your information compromised and thus exposing you to financial fraud.

Legitimate sites that are really selling furniture such as a dinette set will have actual products to sell along with articles on their particular niche. While many sites can paste a picture of a fine sofa or kitchen hutch along with a fake ?Trusted Site? logo?few illegitimate ones will have all the details that go along with a real website. Don?t be afraid to use the ?Contact Us? tab to ask a few questions about which stylish dining chairs go with what kinds of dining table genres.

There comes a point when decorating any room when you really cannot reasonably add one more table or large piece of furniture. However, while this may be the time when you conclude that the room is finished and there is no room to add anything else to the d?cor, take one more careful look at the space and ask yourself two questions: Are there any odd spaces in the room? Is there enough seating for a room of this size? If there are bare spots in the d?cor that are not part of any traffic pattern and if there just do not seem to be enough seats to accommodate the room, then perhaps a beautiful Parsons chair is the solution to your ?almost perfect? room!

It is indeed a fine line between having a perfectly decorated space and having awkward but barely noticeable blank areas in the d?cor that call out for something?but not a table or similar piece of furniture. A chair is one of those lovely furnishings that can fill a slight void in the floor plan, be functional, and still add to the decorative appeal of the entire room. And where magnificent Parsons chairs are concerned, these stately seats can accommodate nearly any interior design scheme due to the versatility of their design and materials.

Choosing Garden Furniture, A guide to Materials Used

Posted by admin on August 18th, 2008

Garden furniture is available in a variety of materials, including Softwood, Hardwood, Cast Iron, Cast aluminium, and Wicker.

The choice of material will depend upon durability, finish, strength and personal preference.

Softwood furniture is generally made from Pine. It is cheap, cheerful and functional. It lacks strength and durability and will deteriorate after 3 or 4 years if not treated. It is high in maintenance and ideally, needs dry storage during the winter months.

There are a number of different hardwoods used in the manufacture of outdoor furniture. The most common include Yellow Balau, Eucalyptus, Meranti and Teak.

Teak. The most durable and long lasting of all hardwoods, due to its high content of natural oils and rubber. Each piece of teak is kiln dried to less than 12% moisture content before being shaped and used to produce each piece of furniture. This prevents any changes in climatic conditions affecting the furniture when moved to different geographical areas. Every item is manufactured using traditional dowelled mortise and tenon joinery complimented with solid brass fittings and fixings. Naturally rich in oleoresin, teak is highly resistant to warping and rotting and will last for many years without any special treatment. However, after time, teak can show hairline cracks, especially in end grains. These are quite natural and do not detract from the wood’s strength or durability. Read the rest of this entry »

Chairs - History Part IV

Posted by admin on August 17th, 2008

In this next instalment in our series on the history of chairs we’re going to pick up with English chairs.

Although much English furniture comes from French and Italian influence, the early forms of English chairs owe very little to influences outside of England itself. This is especially true towards the end of the Tudor period. It was during this time that the French began to take their chair designs from the English.

The squat style chairs with heavy backs that were carved like a piece of paneling gave way to taller, more slender and elegant chairs. The framework of these chairs were less carved and new directions were taken as far as how these chairs were ornamented. Cabinet makers of the Restoration began to take advantage of the opportunities given to them to design these new chairs. Chairs began to take on an elaborate construction with graceful semicircular ornaments that connected all four legs by a vase shaped knob in the center. The arms and legs of the chairs of this period were scrolled with the splats of the back containing a rich arrangement of spirals and scrolls. Read the rest of this entry »

Nursery Furniture: Designing On A Dime

Posted by admin on August 16th, 2008

Nursery furniture is something that every expectant family is looking forward to, until you walk into the store and notice the price tags that go along with most of the sets available. This type of furniture is ideal for those that do have a new baby on the way for several reasons. First, it provides for the protection a child needs when sleeping. In addition to that, it helps to provide the storage, function and play areas for a child as well. But, it doesn’t have to cost you more than having the baby itself will. You can actually design your own nursery furniture and save quite a bit.

What is it that you are looking for? For one thing, the crib should be considered. When selecting a crib, look at quality. It should be strong and able to hold a child at least up to 40 pounds, when you can move them to a larger bed. You should also want to find a crib that has rails that are spaced closely together so that they can not squeeze their heads through the slots. The rails should not slide down easily but should be easy enough for you to slide back up or down with a child in your hand. Look for safety seals on these products as a must for quality. For a crib, if possible, purchase new and keep safety as your first and main goal. The rest of the pieces are more flexible, though. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve never ordered ANYTHING online before, let alone a major purchase such as a dining room set. I was a bit apprehensive that the product would not be of high quality or sturdy.
